Depression and/or “Baby Blues”

What’s the one thing that seems to be plaguing this generation more than any other generation in history ?!?

That’s Right! DEPRESSION!

Everyone seems to be ‘depressed’ or suffering with some form or level of depression these days…but why?!!?


I came across this great book called “Healthy Foods” (by George D Pamplona-Roger, M.D.). And when you look at the foods that should be increased and decreased in the diet for this ‘disorder’, it’s no wonder we exist in such a ‘displeased with life’ world.

Disclaimer:- This is merely a suggestion by myself, based on this very detailed and well written book, that frankly I believe should be in every kitchen in the world.  This is by no means meant to be a cure for depression, but a well researched ‘suggestion’ regarding “lifestyle” and “diet” choices, based on the science behind different foods and how they affect our bodies. 

*Firstly, what is depression?

Some people describe depression as “living in a black hole” or having a feeling of impending doom. However, some depressed people don’t feel sad at all—they may feel lifeless, empty, and apathetic, or men in particular may even feel angry, aggressive, and restless.Whatever the symptoms, depression is different from normal sadness in that it engulfs your day-to-day life, interfering with your ability to work, study, eat, sleep, and have fun. The feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, and worthlessness are intense and unrelenting, with little, if any, relief.[]

According to Dr. George D Pamplona-Roger, “Anti-depressant drugs do not replace the need to follow a healthful diet and abstain from all other types of drugs, including those considered legal since all of them attack the nervous system…depressed individuals in general tend to crave refined sweets(pastries,candy, chocolate, etc) that have very little nutritional value. They may also have an appetite for saturated fat as found in sausages and other meat products.”

*According to the book mentioned above, here are the foods that depressed individuals should INCREASE:-

– oats
– wheatgerm
– chickpea
– almond
– walnut
– brazil nut
– cashew
– pine nut
– avocado
– brewer’s yeast
– royal jelly
– vitamins B1, B6 and C
– lecithin
– folates
– pollen
– iron


*According to the book, here are the foods that depressed individuals should DECREASE/AVOID:-

– white sugar
– saturated fat
– stimulant beverages
– alcoholic beverages

NOTE: “Brazil nut is very rich in vitamin B1, which is necessary to balance the nervous system.”


Abu Hurayrah narrates that The Prophet pbuh said:
“There is no disease that Allah has created, except that He also has created its remedy.”
Bukhari 7.582

Usamah ibn Shuraik narrated:
“… ‘O Allah’s Messenger! Should we seek medical treatment for our illnesses?’ He replied: ‘Yes, you should seek medical treatment, because Allah, the Exalted, has let no disease exist without providing for its cure, except for one ailment, namely, old age’.”
