Stuffy or Runny Nose…

(NOTE: Although the question that starts this topics was posed by a pregnant mother, the home remedies I suggested is also applicable for anyone with a cold)

QUESTION: Assalamu Alaikum. I find my nose to be stuffy quite often- and I don’t have a cold nor any other symptoms of a cold. How normal is this during pregnancy? And does it ever go away? [Stuffy Mummy(Thursday 10th December, 2009 4:10 PM)]

Wa Alaikumu Salaam,

Ah ha! The phantom pregnancy cold! I got this in three of my pregnancies. I had gotten an annoying cold very early on in each pregnancy. And would you believe, the only thing that stopped me from going crazy was chocolate biscuits and biscuits with chocolate filing. I don’t think it was the chocolate that helped exactly, I suppose that was just a craving. I think it was more the act of chewing. Chewing and snaking on things gets your facial muscles moving and you would notice that when you are chewing, the nose irritation stops.

I’m not suggesting that you eat 24/7, but I do recommend you have snacks around to prevent you from going crazy at night, drink plenty fluids and juices for the vitamin C, take vitamin C & D and don’t sleep with the air conditioning on, as this would make cold symptoms worse. Leave windows open & maybe put a hot kettle/pot of water (with a little vicks in it) next to your bed, for the steam and vapours to clear your passages.

Also, drink warm tea before bedtime. Warmth is the key ingredient to clearing your passages. So I’m not kidding when I say cuddling with the hubby at night is a perfectly scientific & logical method of curing the cold:)

Remember also, that we  have particular ‘pandemics’ going on these days so make sure to monitor your symptoms. An easy way to do this is to take a multi-symptom panadol. If your symptoms don’t start clearing up Inshaa Allah within 3 days and you find that you are getting worse, be sure to contact your doctor just to rule out all other possibilities!

“May Allah (swt) give us all a healthy and breathable day…Ameen”

Yours Truly,
